તન્મયે સૌ પ્રથમ વર્ષ 1986માં ‘ફૂલવારી’માં બાળ કલાકારનો રોલ ભજવ્યો હતો. તન્મયે બાદમાં ‘ચૂપકે-ચૂપકે’, ‘યસ બોસ’, ‘ખીચડી’, ‘મણીબેન.કોમ’ જેવી જાણીતી ફિલ્મો અને સિરિયલોમાં પણ અદાકારી કરી હતી. તન્મયના પરિવારમાં પત્ની, પુત્ર-પુત્રી ઉપરાંત માતા-પિતા, ભાઇ-ભાભી અને ભત્રીજી છે.
બેંકમાં 4 હજારની નોકરી કરતો હતો: ગુજરાતમાં જન્મેલા તન્મય વેકરિયાના પિતા અરવિંદ વેકરિયા જાણીતા સ્ટેજ ડ્રામા આર્ટિસ્ટ છે. તન્મયે થિયેટરમાં 15 વર્ષ સુધી કામ કર્યું હતું. તન્મય એક સમયે બેંકમાં નોકરી કરીને મહિને ચાર હજારની કમાણી કરતો હતો. બેંકમાં તે માર્કેટિંગ એક્ઝિક્યૂટિવનું કામ કરતો હતો. જોકે, ‘તારક મહેતા..’ સિરિયલે તેનું જીવન જ બદલી નાખ્યું. આ શોએ માત્ર તેને લોકપ્રિયતા જ નહીં, પરંતુ પૈસા પણ આપ્યા.

નટુકાકા એટલે કે ઘનશ્યામ નાયકને તે સમયે બાયપાસ સર્જરી કરાવવી હતી અને તેમણે સિરિયલમાંથી બ્રેક લેવો હતો. તેમના સ્થાને બાઘાને લેવામાં આવ્યો હતો. બાઘાનું પાત્ર એટલું લોકપ્રિય થયું કે નટુકાકા શોમાં પરત આવી ગયા છતાં પણ તેને શોમાં રાખવામાં આવ્યો હતો.
